Using my network of local Brokers, I helped Merlyn, Steven and Hannah Ruddell sell their home in Bellingham and find a new one in Portland.
When I asked Merlyn, Steven and Hannah which organization that they would like me to support, they chose Free the Slaves. Slavery isn't legal anywhere but happens almost everywhere including the U.S. and Europe. Slaves are forced to work, without pay, under the threat of violence. They cannot walk away. Slavery is the result of vulnerability. It flourishes where people cannot meet their basic needs and lack economic opportunity, education, health care, and honest government. Free the Slaves' strategy is to reduce people’s vulnerability, help those in slavery to freedom, and transform the political, economic, cultural, and social circumstances that make slavery possible. Their strategy is to bring a rigorously evaluated field model to communities where slavery is worst and training staffers at a wide range of organizations..
